Aligned Eating and Weight Loss

I’m extremely prodiversity and antideprivation when it comes to the issue of diet and weight loss. Any extreme behavior—which is what most diets are—very well may prompt a dramatic weight loss. So many of these programs do, and hence their appeal. But research shows that not only does this weight not stay off for the long term, but that most dieters regain everything they lost and then some. That’s because these food plans are too restrictive and limiting and so they are unsustainable over time.

Besides all of that, losing weight rapidly through calorie restriction is extremely destabilizing, and not just to your body, but to your willpower, mood, and spirit as well. When you’ve convinced your body that it is in a state of starvation and deprivation, rather than in the sustainable zone of pleasure, it needs to quickly deplete its energy stores (which is what releasing fat is) and sends out a message of panic that cannot be sustained over a long period.

We’ve got to slow it down when it comes to food; we need to spend more time thinking about it, shopping for it, preparing it, and eating it. We’ve got to be willing to enjoy it and find the pleasure it brings to our bodies. It’s the only way to find peace and balance with it.
